Shoulder injuries can be a nuisance, here's how to avoid the most common ones
Hey guys, let's talk about some of the problems that we can run into if we have weak areas of our shoulders.
The most surprising part of this blog is you will discover you don't need to over-train your shoulders to cause an injury, you can under-train them too!
Let me take you through 3 of the most common shoulder injuries and how to prevent them.
Rotator cuff tear:
A rotator cuff injury consists of a tear in one of the muscles or tendons surrounding the top of the humerus.
This can be a sudden injury caused by a number of factors or an injury that has been gradual and relatively painless causing you to not notice it.. until it is too late!
It is quite common among people who do regular weight-bearing exercise, when not practising good technique, but it needs to be treated with care during recovery so as to avoid a recurrence.
It is tempting to try to carry on exercising when you have this injury, but not a good idea unless doing the type of rehab exercises you may be prescribed from a qualified physio, which are tailored to the injury and the individual patient.
Shoulder impingement:
This can be painful, especially when untreated.
A shoulder impingement is caused when the acromion (edge/end of the scapula) pushes against the rotator cuff as a person lifts their arm.
This can result in a shooting pain that can cause a major lack of range of motion especially if left untreated.
Shoulder dislocation:
Another painful injury which can be caused by lack of strength in the shoulder joint amongst other common causes.
Shoulder dislocation is caused when the humerus or another bone in the shoulder joint slips out of position.
Trying to raise the arm can cause excruciating pain. Usually people will hear/feel a "pop", this is usually an indicator, as well as a dull aching pain, that the shoulder could be dislocated.
When you exercise regularly and don't over-stress your muscles by straining them or lifting weights which are too heavy, you should not have these problems.
If you do, it is wise to seek the help of a qualified physio who can help you with rehab as soon as you experience the problem.
They will also give you advice as to how to avoid recurrences - and the rule of thumb is to listen to your body, make sure you are using the correct techniques, and don't over-train your muscles by using too heavy weights.
